How to cast a fly rod farther (fast)
The easiest way to increase the distance of your current fly fishing cast is learning to "shoot" line at the end of your cast. This term means to allow extra line you have pulled off the spool to flow through the guides and out the tip of the rod on the final stroke. This technique can easily add an extra 20 feet to you cast.
In order to make this cast successfully, the casting loop must be directed out towards where you want the line to travel and not down into the water. Anglers attempting this will often make the deliver with more power and with a much lower stop than the previous false casts. The fly and the fly line will only go the direction the tip was traveling when it stopped. If you want to quickly make longer fly fishing casts, practice releasing your grip with your line hand as soon as you accelerate and stop and before you begin the follow through. Do not completely loose control of the line with your left hand. Instead, make a circle with your thumb and forefinger or allow the line to slide across your palm. In this instructional video, you will learn exactly how you can quickly begin shooting line for longer casts.
